Whether you’ve been working together for a few months or a few years, the relationship between a family and their nanny thrives on clear communication and mutual respect. One of the most important tools for maintaining that trust is a well-written, up-to-date nanny contract. Allowing a contract to quietly expire can lead to confusion, frustration, and missed opportunities for growth. That’s why regular contract renewals are so important—for both families and nannies.
What Is a Contract Renewal?
A nanny contract renewal is a chance to revisit the terms of your current agreement, update anything that’s changed, and reaffirm your commitment to working together. It’s more than just paperwork—it’s an opportunity for a fresh start and a stronger partnership.
Why Contract Renewals Are Important
1. They Keep Expectations Aligned
Over time, job duties, schedules, and needs shift. Children grow, routines change, and what worked six months ago might not be working now. A contract renewal gives both sides the opportunity to openly discuss what’s changed—and what needs to be adjusted moving forward.

2. They Provide Legal and Practical Protection
Having a current agreement in place helps avoid misunderstandings and ensures clarity around things like compensation, time off, and termination notice periods. An expired contract can make it harder to resolve conflicts or enforce terms.

3. They Encourage Honest, Respectful Conversations
Renewals create a natural space for feedback. Families can share appreciation and address concerns, and nannies can express what’s working or where they may need more support. Open dialogue leads to stronger, more respectful working relationships.

4. They Provide an Opportunity to Revisit Pay and Benefits
Whether it’s time for a raise, changes to paid time off, or updates to work hours, renewing the contract is the right time to make those adjustments official.

5. They Show Professionalism on Both Sides
When both parties treat the nanny-family relationship like the professional partnership it is, it builds long-term trust. Taking time to renew your contract sends the message that the relationship matters and is worth maintaining thoughtfully.

What to Review During a Contract Renewal
Updated job duties and responsibilities
Schedule and availability
Compensation and benefits
Paid time off, holidays, and sick leave
Transportation and mileage reimbursement
Notice period and contract length
Any new policies or expectations
Don’t Wait Until It Expires
At Select Sitters, we recommend that families and nannies review their contracts annually, or any time there’s a significant change to the job. Set a calendar reminder at least 30 days before the current contract ends to start the conversation and give yourselves time to make thoughtful updates.

Ready to Renew? Here’s What Comes Next
Once you’ve reviewed the contract, it’s important that the family and nanny have an open discussion about any proposed changes—whether it's updated hours, pay rate, duties, or time off. Make sure everyone is on the same page before moving forward. When all parties are ready, you can send the updated contract to Select Sitters, and we’ll set it up for e-signature to make things official. There are no fees for renewing your contract with a current nanny. If any updates need to be made to payroll—such as a change in hourly rate or schedule—we’re happy to assist. Families can also make these changes directly by logging into their payroll account, navigating to the employees tab, and updating the employment section.
